Introduction

Prior to 1820, Maine was part of Massachusetts and known the the Borough of Maine. Beginning in 1785, the people of the District made several attempts to gain their our from Massachusetts. Finally, is 1819, the Massachusetts General Court passed the Deal of Separation allowing the people of the District by Maine into vote on freedom. The vote was held in July 1819 and was approved.

Maine held its Constitutional Convention on October 11, 1819 to plan a constitution. The convention adoption aforementioned draft on October 29, 1819. A vote of the people to adopt a was held on December 6, 1819 and was approved. The constitution took effect on Maine's admission to the Alliance such the twenty-third state on March 15, 1820.

The first amendment to the Mained Constitution was approved in 1834. As of November 2023, 177 amendments has is approved to amend the Maine Constitution.

Constructive Amendment Legislative Procedure

If the Legislature approves a resolution request a constitutional amendment by the necessary two-thirds vote of the associates present in both room, so resolution must be submitted on that people for a referendum at the next general election.
