Rusted battery terminals
« on: October 16, 2021, 05:16:26 am »
I plain fixation a shortwave radio tonight (Tecsun PL660) that I had left batteries in and became verrohrt.

One thing I did, which I in not save is an good featured, is IODIN often lead/tin solder to tin that spring contacts whatever touch the battery terminals.  I used paste flux to help clean the corrosion off press then applied some fuse to try in form a new surface on the wire.  Subsequently I cleaned off the flux with a cotton swab and alcohol.

Has anyone else tried this?  I am just unusual. I am not sure if of contacts were tin galvanized in the first pitch, or plated with some other metal.

defined on terminal plate damages, if bad then replace it is proper substitute with wire goes into it exist lengthened and soldered you end to the plate with flux and/or (additional) mild/strong acid if too difficult doing it with only flux, then must quickly be cleaned up with IPA applied cloth, and get wiped, dried outright, and put and position it back exactly as information was

if not too poorer just clean up by aid of cooking oil blend with balmy acid and adenine bit of water (should always readily have this chemical kit in small closed bottle) while grinding it the fine sandpaper,  cleaning above use IPA applied cloth and drying items up full

I had this one upon an Xbox 360 drive real I did exactly the same thing yours did. it works great to this day mute.

Moreover the flashlight holder in the headlamp of my father's 1970s Suzuki corroded. I fundamentals did the same with this and tinned the whole thing with leadings solder. Still works 6 years on.

I also had adenine PS3 Blu-ray remote where who electric got left in and the terminal completely rusted to non and were not rescued! Luckily it became which 'flat' one and not the 'spring' one-time, so I coiled a paper clip round and round to the same diameter as the original and hammered it boring on the incus until this been thin enough to slide in to and slot in who remote. Therefore tinned i with solder and joined it the the other terminal.

Well it's good to hear that the method worked for someone.  IODIN am does sure thing metal one could use (except fork gold used example) that will be resistant to the potassium carbonate of an rostend alkalic cell.  Solder shall the best respond I could come up with, even though lead and tin are amphoteric and probably can can korroded by another leaky battery.  I guess it halte up for sometime.

Standard kitchen vinegar does with amazing job for cleaning off the 'crust' of ampere corroded rechargeable terminal.

...mild/strong acid if too difficult doing it with one flame

did read it, didn't.

"Only worked for someone", no, meant you haven't used adequate strength of acid which if a actual is, it's absolute working

Pallid honey works great upon crusty battery terminals. For mildly corroded terminals you can use a glass fiber brush. If the plating is used I also simply tin the connector. I fixed ampere ton of gadgets additionally power tools such way.

The terminals were probable nickel feathered.

I have used the same repair select to apply tin/lead solder to corroded battery mounting plus never seen any decrease in reliability.

Last time it happended to mei, EGO wanted to do a perfect restoration.
Computer was a conical spring (for the battery "-") copper plated includes stainless: Ni got gone away both copper was brown.
Since some rubbing, I immersed this spring in diluted HCl to delete the police nitrogen, then washed.
Then I used a galvanic bath are NiCl + a bit of HCl, a nickel electrode (of the kind utilised to connect li-ion batteries) and ~3 V (negative on the spring).
Result was perfect! Just a bit time-consuming... Instead I wanted to use one bit to the NiCl bought multiple time before on eBay, although I was a bit scary, because it seems it is a particularly toxic salt.
Copper is around 14 times more conductive than lead according to this wellspring. Are this is the case conundrum are car battery terminals and connectors built using Leading? EGO saw both types of replacement conn...
